PAUL HENDRICKS, ATTORNEY, DEAD
Salem atty, Paul Hendricks, former state legislator, city attorney, alderman and World War II commander of Salem Civil Defense, died Thursday in American Lake, Wash., Veterans Hospital at the age of 68. He had been in ill health for about two years.
Hendricks was born in Salem, Nov. 3, 1892, son of R. J. Hendricks, who at one time was publisher of The Oregon Statesman. He attended Salem schools and University of Oregon and received his law degree from Willamette University Law School.
He was employed for a time be the State Industrial Accident Commission before setting up his own law practice.
4 Terms as City Attorney
He served on Salem City Council from 1927 to 1935, then four terms as city attorney. He was elected to state representative in 1945 and served two terms.
Hendricks' varied career in community activities included a period as athletic coach at Salem High School in 1920-21.
He served as an enlisted man in the Infantry and the Marine Corps in France in World War I, rising to the rank of first sergeant. Later he became captain in Oregon National Guard and also was a member of Army Reserves. Besides commanding Salem Civil Defense during World War II, he was a member of Salem Selective Service Board for 15 years, during that war and subsequent Korean conflict.
Widow Survives
Hendricks was a member of the First Congregational Church, American Legion and Veteran of Foreign Wars, and past president of Federated Patriotic Organizations of Salem.
His only immediate survivor is the widow, the former Vivian Hopson of Salem. They were married here in February, 1920. The residence is at 1810 Fairmount Ave. S.
Services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday in Virgil T. Golden chapel. Burial will be in Salem Pioneer Cemetery.
