OBITUARY: Marion county mourns the loss of another one of her most substantial pioneer citizens, John C. Herren having gone to his eternal home at 12:15 a. m. yesterday, his ailment having been fever. "Uncle John," as he was familiarly known was born in Decatur county, Indiana, on March 8, 1828. In 1845 he crossed the plains with his parents, and on July 26, 1853, he became the husband of Elizabeth Sharp.
For forty-six years Mr. Herren resided on a farm on Salem prairie, moving to Salem in 1892 and establishing a home on Winter street near Ferry. He was the father of seven children, two of whom, with their mother survive him; one is a son, Theodore, of Dayton, Yamhill county; and the other, a daughter, Mrs. Della Moore, of Salelm prairie. Four sisters and two brothers also survive him. His illness was of short duration, he being bedfast four days only.
