BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH (contributed by Franklin Herrling):
Ed Herrling was born in Stayton, Oregon, Dec. 4, 1891, he grew up on his father's farm where they raised hay for the stock and cut logs for the sawmill. Ed went to the 8th grade and worked on the farm including gruping stumps to make ground to grow hay and helped haul the logs to the sawmill. Mill City had a town baseball team that played on Sundays and Ed was their pitcher. Pete Kirsch [his future borther-in-law] went to eastern Oregon to look for a homestead and as Ed was almost 21 he wanted to go but his father told him he would have Otto, his older brother, go look at the area in Criterion. Otto was a surveyor and timber cruiser. Otto found a homestead 1/2 mile from a Stochman's place.
Otto took him to the homestead he had picked for Ed. Ed was so dissapointed when he saw it he wanted Otto to take him back home, but he didn't. Otto told him that there were more homesteads that he could file on. Ed got used to the area and the other honesteaders so he stayed. The Scotchman who raised sheep carried a gun and was rought and the neighbors didn't think Ed would last long. Ed built a 12X14 cabin and cleared the sagebrush off to make farm gound. The Scotchman came around and told him, he ought to pay for the fench he put up between them. Ed said he would pay as soon as he was able, but he only had $200 saved and was keeping that to buy a team of horses to plow the fields. In 1916 he gave the Schotchman barley for the fence.
There was only one little thrasher around and they had too much to do so wshen they quit for the winter, Ed bought the machine and fired a crew. In Dec. they raked 1 ft of snow off of the stacks and thrashed until Christmas and the rest they threashe in the spring of 1917. In the sunmer of 1918 the Scotchman sold out and traveled to Scotland.
Ed would take the train from Stayton to easter Oregon after spending the winters with his folks. He would walk from "two Springs Canyon" to his homestead. He stated that after his three years of proofing up on the place they would not see him in this "God forsaken country". But in his third year he had a big wheat crop and stayed until he sold the place in 1952. When he had the big crop he went out and bought an Essex 6 car.
Ed's brother, Alfred, had a homnestead on Criterion also and during World War I they agreed that Alfred would go in the Army and Ed would stay and operate both homesteads. When Alfred came back he got married and decided he didn't want to farm. So Alfred and Ed formed "Herrling Bros". Alfred moved to Bend and Ed stayed and ran the ranch.
In 1930 Ed met Janet Arnold, a school teacher from Shaniko. They were married and moved into Ed's homestead house. They had a daughter, Janet Mae, born in 1932, and a son, Franklin, born in 1934. After Franklin was born they moved to Ed's brother Ben's house along the Dalles-California highway, which "Herrling Bros" purchased. In 1942, a daughter, Mary Ann, was born. While Ed and Franklin were on the sheep trail and Janet and Janet Mae wereflagging down a bus, lightning struck the house engulfing it in flames. Janet ran back and tried to get the baby out but couldn't reach her and she perished in the fire. The family spent the rest of the summer in one of the old homestead houses and that fall moved to Maupin, and Ed drove back and forth to operate the ranch.
Ed and Alfred would buy up the neighboring ranches as they came available, some were their brother's and sister's homesteads. Ed did the haying and took care of the cattle in the summer, and fed the sheep and cattle in the winter. During lambing Ed moved out to the lambing camp. During sheep shearing the whole family would move out to the shearing camp. Janet and Janet Mae cooked for the crew. In 1952, Ed and Alfred decided to sell the ranch. They had accumulated 13,000 acres, two bands of sheep and some cattle. Ed had been on Criterion for 40 years.
Ed lived in Maupin and in 1954 Ed and Janet bought Janet's folds farm in Shedd, Oregon. Ed and Janet lived at both places for a while and then moved to Shedd.
Ed farmed the place for a few years before renting it out.
Ed and Janet traveled to Mexico, California, and Florida in the winters.
They traveled for 9 years until Janet's death in 1962. Ed continued to live in Shedd until his death Nov. 23, 1972.
