BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH (contributed by Franklin Herrling):
Janet was born at the Arnold farm in Shedd, Oregon, on Oct. 21, 1905. The farm was part of a donation land claim taken by her great-grandfather, Vineyard C. Brock in 1854. She went to grade school and high school in Shedd. After graduation she attended Normal School in Monmouth, Oregon and graduated as a school teacher. Janet was teaching in Shaniko when she met Ed Herrling, who had a homestead nearby on Criterion. They were married in Bend, Oregon, on May 22, 1931, after school was out for the summer. She quit teaching after gettingf married and moved to into Ed's homestead house. Janet had three children, Janet Mae, born March 13, 1932, Franklin, born Jan. 2, 1934, and Mary Ann, born April 1942 (died July 3, 1942 in a house fire.)
After the house burned down on Criterion they moved to Maupin, Oregon. Janet resuemd teaching first in Maupin they at Pine Grove where she taught in a one room school, teaching all eight grades.
When it was shearing time the whole family moved out to the shearing camp where Janet cooked for 15-20 men.
Janet stopped teaching in 1952 when they sold the ranch so they could travel together.
In 1954 Ed and Janet bought out Janet's brother's and sister's part of her folks farm in Shedd, Oregon.
Janet and Ed traveled for 9 years and spent most winters in Mexico, Florida and California.
Janet never learned to drove so while on the farm in Shedd she [used a] bicycle to go to the mall and the neighbors called her the "Bicycling Grandmother".
Janet died on Oct. 11, 1962 at the St. Vincent Hosptial in Portland.
