Evening Capital Journal 14 Nov 1888, 4:4

He Died Suddenly, of Apoplexy, at His Home in this City. Yesterday.
“D. Howard is dead!” Such was the sad announcement that shocked the people of Salem, as it was spread over the city early in the morning.
The news was as unexpected as it was sad. Tuesday Mr. Howard was at his market on State street, attending to his business affairs as usual and apparently in the best of health and spirits. The evening he spent at the cigar stand of his son, T.A. Howard, on Commercial street, with a party of friends. About 11’ o’clock he and Mr. George Collins started for home. The two friends stood in front of Mr. Collins’ house on the corner of Court and Church streets and chatted a while before parting.
Mr. Howard then went home and retired about 12 o’clock. Shortly afterwards he complained to his wife that he was sick at his stomach and requested her to prepare him a nauseating mixture that would produce vomiting. He was immediately afterwards seized with a convulsive vomiting fit and the violent spasms caused the blood to rush to his head, bursting a blood vessel near the base of the brain.
Dr. Holmes, the family physician, was speedily summoned, but death had done its work before he arrived.
Mr. Howard was nearly 51 years of age. He came to Oregon in 1849 and was a pioneer among pioneers here, having taken and honorable and conspicuous part in all the important events of those early days that tried men’s souls. For many years he has been engaged in business in Salem, and has always been considered among the city’s most honored citizens and enterprising men. His sudden death is not only a terrible shock to his bereaved family, but a loss that is keenly felt by the entire community. He leaves a wife, a son, a mother, two sisters, and four brothers to mourn his demise.
The funeral service will take place at his late residence at 2 o’clock to-day, and the interment will be at the I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
