DEATH CERTIFICATE:
OBITUARY:
At his home one-half mile ear of the fair grounds, Friday, July 10, 1891, at 10 o'clock a. m., John A. Huffman, aged 61 years. Mr. Huffman was born on September 27, 1830, in Harding county, Virginia. He lived there until he was fifteen years of age. He then removed with his parents to near Warsaw, Mo. He got his schooling in Virginia and Missouri, going to school for fourteen years. He learned the tanner's trade in Missouri, after which he started for California in 1849, arriving in the spring of 1850, with a horse team. This was the year the cholera was so bad on "the plains."
He was married at Sonoma, California, to Frances A. Lovall. He worked in the mines and speculated, making plenty of money at times and having his "ups and downs," like most '49 pioneers in the Golden state. He came to Oregon in 1860, and bought the place where he lived and died, 230 acres, near the fair grounds, of Gilliam Walker, the year.
He served one term as Marion county commissioner.
He always held religious views, but belonged to no church, until a few days ago, when he united with the Catholic church. His first wife died June 15, 1864, at the home place. He was married about sixteen years ago a second time to Mrs. Evaline Anderson, daughter of John Mayfield. By his first wife he had five children, all living. They are Mrs. Ruth Ann Byrne, near Salem; Mrs. Amanda Smith, on the Abiqua; H. L. Huffman, near by; Mrs. Emma Scott, near Atchison, Kansas. By his second wife he had five children, three living, Mrs. Lulu Kays, near Independence; Miss Bertha, at home; Edward B., at home. Mr. Huffman was a successful man, and leaves a large estate. He had many friends throughout the state, especially among the pioneers. He has been gradually sinking for three of four months, growing weaker day by day, and he passed away peacefully and without suffering. The remains will leave the house promptly at 1 o'clock, p. m. tomorrow (Sunday), thence to the Catholic church, where the funeral ceremonies will be held - thence to the I. O. O. F. cemetery.
