LEADING CITIZENS ARE DEAD
George P. Hughes and James C. Brown Pass Away
He sleeps, but the world says that he is dead. he has passed to the other side, to the great unknown, where we all must follwo. George P. Hughes is dead.
The announcement came as a sudden shock last evening, for George Hughes was a man well-known in the city and state. His friends were legion, and his enemies, if he had any, were forgiving.
George Pringle Hughes was the eldest child of John Hughes and Emma Pringle-Hughes. He was born in Salem on May 29, 1858, and died in this city of heart failure on August 29, 1q904, aged 46 years and 3 months. He attended the local school and the Willamette University, graduating from that institution of learning in June, 1878, with the degree of A. M., at the age of 20 years, and was always considered one of the brightest students in th school. He took a special business course at Heald's College, San Francisco, also graduating from that school in 1879.
His father, the late John Hughes, who died April 25, 1903, was one of the pioneer merchants of this city, and George, at an early age, entered into an active business life. When only 15 years of age, and while attending the university, his father was very sick for several weeks, and the large business was entrusted to him. he managed it with the care of an experienced merchant, and, when his education was completed, he was installed as manager for his father. How well he conducted the trust imposed upon him is evident by the prosperity of the firm.
He was an active Republican, and few conferences or conventions were held without him. At the age of 16 years he affiliated with the Methodist church, and was always a liveral supporter of that denomination. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity, and high in their councisl. When the local lodge of Elks was organized he joined as a charter member.
In life he was generous to a fault, and was always willing to do a favor for a friend or neighbor. Scarcely a day passed that he did not perform some act of charity, but he was opposed to publicity, and sought to work in his quiet and unassuming way.
A good citizen has departed, one that his kind acts and integrity for overshadowed and outstrip his faults and shortcomings. He will always be remembered for the sunshine that he spread.
He leaves his mother, three sisters, Mrs. A. M. Bush, of this city; Mrs. D. B. Mackie, of Portland, Mrs. W. A. Carter, of Gold Hill, and one brother, J. F., of this city, together with many firends, to mourn his loss.
The funeral will be held from the residence on High street tomorrow morning at 10 o'clock. Rev. Heppe will conduct the services. De Molay Comandery, Knight Temp;lar, will take charge of the remains at the grave.
