BIOGRAPHICAL: 
Married Julette Smith in Parke Co., Indiana in 1846; came to Oregon in 1852 according to daughter -- 1853 according to land claim; lived Salem and Silverton before moving to Waterloo. "James C. Hutton a half-brother of Albert G. Hutton, was born in Pike county, Indiana, in 1828. His wife was Julie E._____ whom he married in the county of his birth, September 24, 1846. He arrived in Orgon City, October 1853, and settled upon his donation claim on the first of April, 1854. The children were Calvin and Owen. A daughter of Owen Hutton married Oswald West, Governor of Oregon, and another daughter married Ben W. Olcott, Secretary of the State of Oregon."

Facts concerning the early history of Waterloo, Oregon. James C. Hutton's Donation Land Claim was #3293 encompasing 310 acres and located in Sec. 31, 32, T6S, R1E in Marion Co., b. arrived in Oregon on 18 Oct. 1853, settled his claim on 15 Feb. 1854, md. Julie E. 24 Sept 1846, Parke Co., Indiana.

OBITUARY: 

J. C. HUTTON DIES, AGED 87.  
James C. Hutton, aged 87, a pioneer of the Willamette Valley and for many years prominent in Salem, died Monday at Waterloo, Oregon, where he had resided for a number of years.  The body will be brought here Monday morning and taken from the 8:35 train to the cemetery, where a short service will be held.  He is survived by a widow and two sons, O. D. Hutton, formerly of Portland, but now of Tacoma, and Calvin Hutton, of Dallas, and one daughter, Mrs. James Harlin [sic. Harbin] of Waterloo.  Mrs. Oswald West of this city, is a daughter of O. D. Hutton and a granddaughter of the deceased. -- Oregonian.
