OBITUARY:
E. T. BARKUS DIES; PIONEER FEED MAN
Edgar T. Barkus, 75, after nearly 25 years residence in Salem died last night at his home at 890 Saginaw street after a short illness. He, with his son Walter Barkus, had been engaged in the Salem Fed store for the past 21 years. Born in Millville, Ind., he first came to Oregon about 35 years ago, settling in Silverton, where he handled the Silverton flour mill. His son, Walter Barkus, last night said, "My father has always been an ardent devotee of Oregon. An example of this enthusiasm was shown during a trip made three years ago by the family into southern California. We found the climate wet and nasty, mid-winter weather here. He refused to stay, saying ‘Why do folks live in this country, why don’t they come to Oregon where the climate is always marvelous. Another time, about 20 years ago, my father made a business rip to the middle west and planned on spending some time upon the completion of his affairs visiting with friends and relatives. But he returned almost immediately as the difference in the cool moist Oregon climate and Midwest affected him".
Survivors are: widow, Mrs. Alma Barkus of Salem; one daughter, Mrs. Maude Tweed of Salem; two sons, Walter Barkus of Salem and Pearl Barkus of New York. Funeral arrangements have been made for Tuesday afternoon, September 18, Leslie church, at 2 p.m.
