IOOF - Delos Jefferson, age 79 [sic], died East of Salem, of lagrippe and erysipelas. 
BIOGRAPHICAL:
Delos and Matilda Jefferson were living in Washington Co. in 1850. Delos Jefferson and his wife filed on a Donation Land Claim in Oregon City. His DLC #4972 is located in Marion Co. in T9S, R3W, Sec.1 and contains 607.41 acres. They settled on the Claim 16 Aug. 1852. Delos was b. in Cattaraugus Co., New York and md. Matilda on the 14 Nov 1850 in Portland, Oregon. Affiants are: Simon Smith, Wm. Delany amd Isaac Cook. 
In 1860 Delos and M. J. Jefferson are living/farming in North Salem pct. and he is age 36 b. NY and M. J. is age 29 b. KY; children were: J. G (female) age 8, J. G. (female) age 7, J. __ (female) age 4, J. W. (male) age 3, S. (female) age 1--all b. in Oregon. Household included two other males. 
1870 CENSUS - Delos Jefferson, age 46 b. NY and Matilda J. age 39 b. TN with children: Julia A. age 18, Harriet age 17, Willard age 12, Susan age 11, John age 6, Edward age 5, and Annie age 2 - all born in Oregon. William Latourette, age 25 b. MI, is also in the household. 
1880 OR CENSUS - Delos Jefferson, age 56, farmer, b. New York, is enumerated with wife Matilida, age 50, b. Tennessee, along with Harriett, age 24, Susan, age 21, John, age 17, Edward, age 14 and Anna, age 12, all born in Oregon. Also enumerated with the family is a nephew of Delos, Ralph Holmes, age 9, b. Oregon.

BIOGRAPHICAL: 
Delos Jefferson, son of Willard Jay and Susanna (Burt) Jefferson, was born at Machias, a frontier village in Cattaraugus Co., New York, April 15, 1824. He died at Salem, Oregon on December 29, 1893. In 1835 he removed with his parents to Huron Co., Ohio, and in 1846 and 1847 he was enrolled in the preparatory department of Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio. He left for the west coast in 1847, spending that winter at Fort Hall, Idaho and reaching Oregon next spring. He was a farmer, carpenter, cobbler, and teacher. Author: Willard Espy.

OBITUARY: 
JEFFERSON -- At the family home on Salem prairie at midnight Friday, Dec. 29, 1893, Delos Jefferson. 
Deceased would have been 70 years of age next April and was a member of the band of pioneers that is rapidly passing away. He came to Oregon from Ohio in 1849 and to him belonged the honor of having run the first engine for the first sawmill at Portland. Afterwards he taught school and worked at his trade as a shoemaker and in 1850, took up a donation land claim in the Waldo Hills near Turner. Half of this he afterwards traded for the home claim on Salem prairie. 
He made a trip to California at an early day and from San Francisco came to Astoria on a whaling boat and thence to Portland by canoe. In 1857 took up his home on Salem prairie. He was the father of eleven children, most of whom have preceded him to the grave, those living being Mrs. Julia Espy, Mrs. Jennie Bell of Oregon City, Mrs. Mattie Heringer, Mrs. Russell and Willard and John. 
His wife is a sister of Capt. J. T. Apperson of Oregon City. The funeral cortege will arrive at Salem at 1 p. m. today and burial will be in Rural cemetery. All members of Chemeketa Lodge No. 1, I. O. O. F., are requested to meet at 12:30 o'clock to attend the funeral.
