Clough. 1880 Census - Matilida Jefferson, age 50, b. Tennessee, is enumerated with husband Delos Jefferson, age 56, farmer, b. New York, along with Harriett, age 24, Susan, age 21, John, age 17, Edward, age 14 and Anna, age 12, all born in Oregon. Also enumerated with the family is a nephew of Delos, Ralph Holmes, age 9, b. Oregon; Nathan Haines writes: Matilda's father, Beverly Apperson, died on the Oregon Trail in 1847. Matilda's mother, Jane, remarried after arriving in Oregon, to Robert Moore, who was the chairman of the committee that wrote the Oregon Constitution. JEFFERSON Genealogy by Willard Espy: Matilda Jane Apperson came with her parents first to Christian Co., Kentucky, then to Newton Co., Missouri, and finally in 1847 to Oregon. With the sudden loss of the two daughters, Clara and Emma in 1863, she was mentally unbalanced for many years.

OBITUARY: 
JEFFERSON -- In East Salem, Ore., Saturday, November 9, aged 79 years. The deceased had been in failing health for a number of years. She was an Oregon pioneer, and the wife of the late DeLoss Jefferson, who was prominently identified with the development of Marion county. The following children survive her: J. A. Jefferson and William Jefferson of this county, and Mrs. Roberts, Mrs. Heringer, and Mrs. Miles Bell, of Portland. The funeral will be held from A. M. Clough's undertaking parlors at 11 a. m. today, the Rev. P. S. Knight conducting the services. Interment will be made in I. O. O. F. cemetery. Oregon Statesman 12 Nov 1907 5:7.
