OBITUARY: JOSEPH - At the family home on 12th street, between Chemeketa and Court streets, at 8:20a.m. Friday, Jan. 8, 1897, D. W. Jospeh, in his 78th year. The deceased was born in Newport, England, on the 12th day of March, 1819. On March 11, 1848, he became the husband of Miss Hannah Davis, at Liverpool, and one year later they came to America, taking up their residence in Salem, Ohio, where they remained for a few years and then moved to other states, finally settling in Salem in 1872, which has been their abiding place ever since.
Mr. Joseph was a stone-cutter and, with his brother also deceased, assisted in the work of constructing a large number of buildings throughout the Willamette valley. This kind of labor told heavily on his physical condition and he finally gave it up and engaged in the merchandise business, opening a small grocery store near his residence. He pursued this occupation about six years and then sold out.
While residents of Salem, Ohio, himself and wife united with the Presbyterian church and he has since been numbered among the followers of that faith. "I trust wholly in the Lord" were his last words yesterday when the spark of life went out. About six months ago he was taken ill with trouble in his glands which culminated in a cancer. He leaves a wife and one adopted daughter, Mary H., to mourn his death. The funeral services will he held at the residence at 2 p.m. today; Rev. Steele officiating and interment will be in Rural cemetery.
