OBITUARY:
BOY KILLED.
Benny, Son of John Knight, Killed on the Toboggan Slide on Edes’ Hill.
The new toboggan slide on Edes’ hill was sadly dedicated yesterday afternoon. Benny, 10-year old son of John Knight the well-known blacksmith, went there yesterday with his sled. He was enjoying himself with several other boys of his age, when George Armstrong, who was slightly under the influence of liquor took the sled and with several small boys on with him, steered them down the slide. The second or third trip the boys pushed Armstrong off, and by his falling off the sled was guided out of its course and turned over. The three or four boys on the sled were dumped off onto the slide. The next sled down scattered the boys, but it is not known just how it struck Benny. Harry Thompson, son of Mr. Thomson who lives on the corner of Liberty and Chemeketa streets, was one of the boys, and he had his face bruised a little, but his injuries were slight. Benny seemed stunned, but Chas. Hellenbrand, who was near by, picked him up, and finding no bruises about him, paid little attention to the accident. The little fellow complained of a pain in his head, and took his sled home. When he arrived home, at 35 Center street, back of the Evangelical church, he lay down, and soon began to have spasms. In a few hours he became unconscious, and so remained until 8 o’clock, when he died. There were no bruises about his body, and Dr. E.Y. Chase, who was called, says he no doubt died of concussion of the brain, from the nervous shock.
The full name of the deceased in Benjamin Willard Knight, and he was 10 years of age on July 19th 1887. He was a strong, healthy and bright boy, and his sudden taking off is indeed a severe blow to his bereaved parents, who are assured of universal sympathy in their sorrow. The funeral will be held tomorrow (Monday), and the body will be buried in the IOOF cemetery. The hour of the funeral could not be determined last night.
