OBITUARY:
PROMINENT MAN DROPS DEAD THURSDAY.
Lindley N. Kirk Falls to Sidewalk
Was Well Known in This City.
Lindley N. Kirk, dropped dead of heart disease yesterday morning at 10 o’clock, in the street at the intersection of Chemeketa and High near the city hall. Mr. Kirk had been unwell for about two weeks, complaining of an intense pain in his side, but had improved sufficiently to go down an hour or so each day to his office in the England building. From such information as can be gathered, it appears that he came down as usual yesterday morning, and after a short time spent in looking after business, went for a walk, leaving a written notice on his office table "Be seated; will be back shortly." A few minutes after 10 o’clock as an Oregon Electric car was en route from the barn to the depot, Motorman Tom Bullock saw his prostrate form on the pavement, and with the other men on the car, rushed to his assistance. Dr. Byrd was sent for, but before he arrival Mr. Kirk had breathed his last, and all efforts to revive him were futile. Mr. Kirk was born September 20, 1839 at Smithfield, Ohio, and was married to Miss Elizabeth Bruff in 1864. Coming to Salem in 1890, he engaged in the nursery business for a time, but of late years had been occupied with insurance, residing at the corner of Capitol and Court streets. The deceased is survived by Mrs. Kirk, one son, Willard B., of Nilos (?) Cal., and three daughters, Mrs. W. L. Clinton, of Portland, and Mrs. E. A. Miller and Miss Laura, of Salem. Funeral arrangements have not yet been completed pending the arrival of the absent children, but it is probable that services will be held Saturday.
