FRANK P. LITCHFIELD IS LAID TO REST;
Popular Rural Mail Carrier is Honored by Large Funeral Yesterday.
Honored by the largest funeral of any private citizen ever held in Salem, Frank P. Litchfield, rural carrier No. 4, was laid to rest in the IOOF cemetery. The large chapel and parlors of the W. T. Rigdon undertaking establishment were crowded to their utmost capacity and hundreds of persons stood outside, unable to find standing room indoors. The Rev. Mr. Fisher of the Chemeketa Street Evangelical church, assisted by Rev. R. N. Avison of the First Methodist church conducted the services, while the singers were from the Evangelical church. Almost the entire postoffice force attended, clerks, city carriers and rural carriers, members of the Modern Woodmen and hundreds of other friends.
The pallbearers were chosen from among the rural carriers. They were J. W. Cox, J. A. Remington, James Albert, Percy Pugh, O. L. Fisher and Wm Squires. There were many beautiful floral pieces, lillies of the valley, carnations, calla lilies, smilax and begonias. The rural carriers sent a beautiful floral pillow, the city carriers a piece and the nurses from the Salem hospital and the state hospital sent flowers, besides banks of flowers from friends. Scrapbook of Alta Foshay Lindholm Merrifield of Silverton, Oregon now in possession of Ellen Lindholm of Salem, Or, 1982; Rural Patrons Sent Flowers. Among the floral pieces at the funeral of Frank P. Litchfield, Friday, was a beautiful wreath of choicest flowers sent by the patrons of Rural Route No. 4, so long served by Carrier Litchfield. Mention of this beautiful tribute was inadvertently omitted from yesterday's Statesman.
