OBITUARY:
WILLIAM MARTIN PASSES AWAY.
Former Jewelryman of Salem Dies at His Home Yesterday Morning.
Suffers From Tuberculosis -- Lived Here Long Time
Funeral Friday Afternoon With Rev. Knight Officiating -- Burial I. O. O. F.
William Willard Martin, affectionately known by his friends as "Billy" Martin, died at his home, 770 North Front street, yesterday morning about 7 o'clock after a lingering illness of several years duration. The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Rigdon & Richardson's chapel. Rev. P. S. Knight, a lifelong friend of the deceased, will officiate. The interment will take place in the I. O. O. F. cemetery. Members of Pacific Lodge No. 50 of the Masonic order will have charge of the burial services.
Was Prominent Business Man
Mr. Martin was well know in Salem as the former owner of the Martin jewelry store south of the Ladd & Bush bank. He came to Oregon with his parents from Pennsylvania in 1865 and almost immediately opened a business in cooperation with N. O. Parrish which was known as the Martin-Parrish jewelry store. The location was the site now occupied by the Capital National bank. In his younger days he was prominently identified with the Salem fire department as chief, and was appointed by Governor L. F. Grover in 1874 to the rank of captain in the second brigade, Oregon state militia.
Born in Pennsylvania
Mr. Martin was born in Pennsylvania, October 20, 1841, and was 73 years old at the time of his death. He was united in marriage with Miss Isabella Myers of Salem, December 1, 1869, and the two went to housekeeping in a cozy cottage on Liberty street. Later they build the large home on Capitol street now occupied by E. T. Barnes. A few years ago they moved into the Front street home and having spent practically all of their lives in Salem they decided to spend the remainder of their years here.
Gives Up Business for Health
About ten years ago Mr. Martin was obliged to give up his business interests owing to failing health. His condition became weaker day by day and he finally spent most of his hours in a small study on the second story of his home where he could tinker with his jewelry instruments and optical paraphernalia. When physicians finally decided that his malady was tuberculosis he began the study of optometry to occupy his mind and during the past few years received diplomas conferring upon him the degree of doctor of optics and doctor of optometry.
He was prominently identified with the Masonic order in this city. It is said of him that he was a "polished gentleman of the old school, ever ready to assist those in distress and courteous at all times to those in less fortunate circumstances than himself." Unfortunate business conditions left him in rather strained circumstances in the later years and Mrs. Martin has been employed at the Stockton mercantile establishment for several years.
He is survived besides his widow, by a niece, Mrs. John H. Scott of this city and a half-sister, Mrs. N. L. Bechtell of Indiana.
