In Salem, September 15, Mrs. Christina McCalley, wife of Andrew McCalley, aged 37 years, 4 months, and 15 days. She was a most estimable lady, in every sphere and duty of life; was a very ardent and active friend of the Sanitary and Christian Commissions; and her loss is severely felt by all who knew her.

GRAVEMARKERS BEARING STONECUTTER’S IDENTIFICATION
Marble headstone with stepped and curvilinear crest for Christina, wife of A. McCalley (1828-1865), native of Burnt Island, Scotland, who was 37 years old at time of her death in childbirth and was buried with her infant son in lot 1 NW. Epitaph face is west facing. The stonecutter’s inscribed mark is in the lower right corner of the reverse (east) face: “Harkins & Paterson [sic] / Portland.” Harkins & Paterson [surname spelling in the directory named below was Patterson] was among five Portland firms listed under marble works in the statewide business directory for 1881 (Oregon Business Directory, 1881, Portland: J.K. Gill & Co., Publishers, p. 712). The firm was not listed in the earliest city directory for Portland published by S.J. McCormick in 1863.
