TWO PATTONS HAVE FUNERAL RITES MONDAY.
Mrs. J.D. McCully Will Be Buried Along With Her Brother Cooke.
Death Strikes Twice At Pioneer Family In Short Space Of Time.
Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 o’clock at the Rigdon chapel for Mrs. J. D. (Lillian) McCully of Hood River and her brother, E. Cooke Patton of Salem. Mr. Patton succumbed to a sudden heart attack Friday night, and death of his sister Saturday morning was attributed to shock of the announcement of her brother’s passing. Mrs. McCully was born in Salem on May 31, 1859. She spent her early life here, and was educated at Salem schools and attended St. Helen’s hall in Portland. Her marriage to J.D. McCully was in May, 1880, in the first Methodist church of Salem. The McCully’s had been planning an elaborate celebration of the golden wedding anniversary, as all members of the bridal party, except the minister, were still living. The women had even planned to wear the same gowns they wore at the original ceremony.
Eastern Oregon Town Home For 25 Years.
Soon after their marriage Mr. And Mrs. McCully went to Joseph, Ore., where Mr. McCully was engaged in the mercantile business for over 25 years. In 1907 they moved to Hood River, where they owned a large orchard tract in the heart of the apple district. Their home has been at Hood River ever since that time, except for a brief period when Mr. McCully was a receiver for a bank in Condon. Though not an invalid, Mrs. McCully had been in poor health for several years. The family had planned to take her to California soon in hope that the southern climate would have a beneficial effect. Mrs. McCully leaves her husband, J.D. McCully of Hood River; a daughter, Eula, also of Hood River; a son, Russell, school superintendent at Yachats, and a granddaughter, Martha, also of Yachats . Mrs. McCully was of a prominent pioneer family, that of Thomas M. Patton and Frances Patton, who came west by ox team in 1851. Her father was an attorney in Salem, and was a prominent member of the legislature. He laid the cornerstone of the capitol building, and the silver trowel with which he laid it has been one of the family’s most treasured possessions. For a time he was United States appraiser in Portland, and later was consol to Japan. He returned to Salem, and in 1886 he opened the Patton bookstore which has been operated by his sons ever since. Services for Mrs. McCully will be held at 2 o'clock this afternoon at Hood River. Following these services the family will come to Salem, and services for Mrs. McCully and Cooke Patton will be held at 2 o’clock, Monday, in the Rigdon chapel. Rev. Charles E. ward, pastor of the First Congregational church, will officiate at this service, and pallbearers for Mr. Patton will be members of the Salem Lodge of Elks, of which he was a character member.

Double funeral is planned for brother, sister. Sudden death of E. Cook Patton of prominent family fatal shock to Mrs. McCully. E. Cook Patton of this city and a sister of Mrs. J. D. McCully of Hood River died within a few hours of each other, will be buried in a double funeral 30 Dec. Patton, age 60, had a heart attack while doing legerdemain at the mineral hot springs at Hubbard late Friday night; he died within an hour. Mrs. McCully, 70, died at her home in Hood River as a result of hearing of the news. The two deaths leave Hal Patton, of Portland, former state senator and member of Salem City Council, the sole survivor of "one of the best known pioneer families in the Willamette Valley". Both his parents, Thomas McFadden Patton and Francis Cooke Patton crossed the plains as children. Grandfather Edwin N. Cooke was Oregon's first state treasurer and a prominent figure in early day navigating on the Willamette River. Father T. McF. Patton was an attorney, served in the State Legislature, and officiated laying the cornerstone for the State Capitol. Later he was U. S. appraiser in Portland and then consul to Japan. He returned to Salem in 1886, opened a book store, which has continued in operation by the Patton brothers.
