OBITUARY:
KILLED BY A CAR
WM. McDUNNAH'S LIFE CRUSHED OUT SUNDAY AFTERNOON.
He Falls on the Salem Motor Co's Track and His Body is Terribly Mutilated.
Inexpressible sorrow hangs over one of Salem's households today, and a deep gloom will continue over the family of Joseph Wilson, of North Salem, for many a weary day as the result of the sudden and awful death of Mrs. Wilson's oldest son, William McDunnah, who was killed by being run over by car No. 4 of the Salem Motor railway company a little after 4 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The car, which was in charge of R. P. Buzzell, on the the most careful employes on the line, had made its regular trip to the fair grounds, leaving the corner of Commercial and Chemeketa streets at 4 o'clock, ran to the fair grounds and was on the return trip when, in passing the house [of] W. H. Massey, in North Salem, the terrible accident occurred.
Robert Basey and Alpha Massey were leading a horse from Mr. Massey's barn to the road, along which the car line runs between the road and a board and wire fence, the space between the car line and the fence being about ten feet. The boys led the horse out of the gate just as the car was drawing near; the animal became frightened at the car and began to rear and plunge, when Willie McDunnah and a boy, named Jacob Kaufman, who were near the animal, also became frightened and started to run away, Kaufman running down along the fence, while McDunnah started across the track. The car was but a few feet away from him and, although Mr. Buzzell rang the gong and attempted to stop the car, the distance was not sufficient to save the boy; he was caught by the car in such a manner as to strike his right shoulder and arm and the heavy vehicle ran over his collar bone and neck, killing him instantly. [The article goes on, describing in detail the wounds Willie received, and also the coroner's inquest, witnesses' reports and absolved Mr. Buzzell and the Salem Motor Railway Company of blame. The company did pay the expenses of burial.]
The jury, after a few minutes devoted to deliberating on the testimony adduced, returned a verdict to the effect that Wm. McDunnah was a native of Ohio and was 14 years, 1 month and 17 days old, that he came to his death on the 16th day of August by being run over by Car No. 4 of the Salem Motor Railway Co. All evidence adduced goes to show that the said R. P. Buzzell took all due caution and to him no blame, whatever, attaches. It was a purely unavoidable accident, and we further find that death was occasioned by the said accident.
The unfortunate boy was a member of the First Baptist Sunday school and the funeral will be held at the church at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. J. P. Farmer officiating. Interment will be in Rural cemetery. Mr. Wilson, stepfather of the deceased, had not arrived in Salem last evening. The father of the deceased was H. McDunnah. He was killed by a train in Loveland, Ohio, a few years ago. Mrs. McDunnah afterward married Mr. Wilson.
