DEATH CERTIFICATE:
OBITUARY:
McGilchrist Funeral Today.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today from the chapel of the Clough-Barrick company for William McGilchrist, sr., who was for more than 50 years a resident of Salem, long active in business, music, lodge and church circles of the city. Rev. W. Irvin Williams will officiate and interment will be in the Odd Fellows cemetery.
Mr. McGilchrist died Sunday, following an illness of almost four months. He suffered a heart attack late in May, several days after fellow members of the Salem Rotary club had honored him at a dinner celebrating his 80th birthday.
Born in Patrick, Lanarkshire, Scotland, May 26, 1863, he was the son of William McGilchrist and Elspeth Miller McGilchrist. He was educated in Scotland, specializing in languages and mathematics and learned the butcher's trade under his father, with whom he continued to work until he came to the United States in 1891. For the first eighteen months of his residence in the country, he made Portland his home, coming to Salem in the spring of 1893. Here he bought 52 acres of land six miles south of the city, putting 10 acre into prunes. Later purchase of land expanded that into a 70 acre orchard. For 15 years he operated the ranch and dryer he had constructed and in 1907 rented it and came into Salem proper where for six years he and his son, William McGilchrist, jr., operated the White House restaurant. After selling the restaurant, he engaged in the cafeteria business until 1922 when he retired. Twenty years after he had helped build the Rosedale school, Mr. McGilchrist and his namesake son erected the McGilchrist building, northeast corner of State and Liberty streets, in 1915. Member of every organized civic singing group which included male voices, he directed choirs of both the Congregational church and the American Lutheran church although he was a member of the Presbyterian denomination. Pacific lodge No. 50, AF & AM, United Artisans, the Burns club of Salem of which he was president, and Salem Rotary club all claimed his membership at the time of his death. He had been a member of the Boys' Chorus and the Men's Chorus and was once president of the Oratorio society in Salem. Mr. McGilchrist married Miss Jeanie Caffrey in 1885 in Scotland. She died in 1929. Thirteen years ago in Vancouver, BC, he married Jessie Thompson, who survives. Also surviving are daughters, Mrs. William Page Douglas of Berkley, Calif., Mrs. Ernest W. Casagrande of Houston, Tex., Miss Jean McGilchrist, Portland; sons, Dr. Nicol M. McGilchrist, Spokane, William, James, and Gordon McGilchrist of Salem; sisters, Mrs. Robert Park of Toronto, Canada, Mrs. Alec Carswell of Johnston, Scotland, and Mrs. Andrew Evans of Glasgow; a brother, Robert McGilchrist, Salem; thirteen grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Oregon Statesman 28 Sep 1943 1:3 & 2:5 Failing health forced William McGilchrist, jr. to retire many months ago from his former activity in the business, civic and social life of Salem; and now death has brought a final climax to his illness. In his going the community loses a real leader and a true gentleman. A native of Scotland, with the qualities of thrift and business acumen for which the Scotch are noted, Billy McGilchrist was at the same time very public spirited, generous for good causes, a worker for community good. Successively and alwas succesfully he engaged in the restaurant, furniture and real estate business here. But he always had time for other activities, he was particularly active in the Rotary club and was one of the most popular district governors that this district of Rotary has ever had. Friends meant much to "Bill" McGilchrist, and he meant much to them. We record with real sorrow the passing of a splendid citizen and a warm personal friend, and extend most sincere sympathies to members of his family. Uncited clipping
