1880 OR CENSUS - James Rickey, age 39, occupation farmer, b. Indiana, is enumerated with wife Josephine, age 25, b. Oregon, along with Edwin, age 4, b. Oregon and Ethel, age 2, b. Oregon. Also enumerated with the family is Stephen Cosper, age 24, identified as hired man, occupation farm laborer, b. Indiana.

BIOGRAPHICAL: 
James Madison Rickey crossed the plains from Dubuque, Iowa to Salem, Oregon on the Oregon Trail in 1850. He was a farmer and a teacher and spent most of his life in Albany and Salem, Oregon.

OBITUARY: 
In Portland, Thursday, June 7, James Madison Rickey at the age of 76 years.
He formerly lived in Salem and the body will arrive here this morning at 10:15 o’clock on the Oregon Electric from Portland. The funeral party will proceed direct to Odd Fellows cemetery where burial will take place. Rev. R.N. Avison will conduct the services. A daughter, Miss Lavonia Rickey, was buried five years ago in the local family lot.
Mr. Rickey was a pioneer Oregonian, coming to French Prairie in 1853. The following sons and daughters survive him: Mrs. Ethel Churchill and Edwin L., Joseph C. and Barton W. Rickey.
