Mass.), maiden name of mother Lavina Waddle (b. Ill.), occupation Housekeeper, interment IOOF 4 Jan 1918, undertaker - Webb & Clough, informant L. H. McMahan; Her parents were Orus Brown and Lavina Forest Waddel, she was granddaughter of Tabitha Moffatt Brown "the mother of Oregon." Wife of William Baker McMahan; Note from Dean Byrd Oct. 8, 2001 - "I do not remember hearing anything about her from her son Leonard H. McMahan ("Uncle Mac" by marriage). He was born in Auburn, Baker County, then a boom-town for gold mining in 1867. Uncle Mac told me that his father William went blind. His father then had Leonard read aloud from newspapers and many books. Uncle Mac said these readings were the real basis of his own education. I don't know when William Baker McMahan died or where he is buried."

OBITUARY: 
At the residence of her son, L. H. McMahan, in Salem, December 29, 1917, of heart failure, Mrs. Rosalie McMahan, 78 years old. Mrs. McMahan was born in Warren Co., Mo., Christmas day, 1839, and crossed the plains in 1846. She was a daughter of Orus Brown, who was a captain of the train, and a niece of Sabathia (sic) Brown, who founded Pacific university at Forest Grove. She was married to W. B. McMahan in September, 1865. She leaves one son, L. H. McMahan of Salem, three grandchildren, two brothers, Willis W. Brown of The Dalles and Henry C. Brown of Seattle, and one sister, Eliza DeBord of Hillsboro. The funeral will be private and attended by immediate friends and relatives.
