OBITUARY:

DEATH OF MISS McNARY.
Passed Away at Her Home Yesterday - The Funeral Today.
Yesterday morning at 10 p'clock, Miss Mattie McNary, of this city, passed peacefully and happily into death, after a period of suffering that had it beginning in the late holiday vacation. For weeks she bore up patiently against the stress of nervous prostration, engendered by her constant and assiduous labors in the the school-room; but her own brave effort, with all that the tender solicitude of her family and friends, and the unstinted skill and care of her physician could do, could not prevail, and she succumbed, glad, in the assurances wrought by her perfect Christian faith. The people of this city need no eulogy upon the life and character of this woman, to whom, during her whole life in their midst, they have awarded the most unvarying love and respect. Like and open book it has lain before them and now. That it has closed, they cherish the lessons of virtue and fortitude, of womanly kindness and Chirstian dignity with which the pages were strewn.
For six years past Miss Mattie McNary has been a valued member of the educational staff of the Salem public schools, and her devotion to her chosen profession, rich in successes as it has been, was primarily the cause of her shattered health. She loved her work, the privileges it conferred of directing the young minds and lives entrusted to her care; their happiness, their advantage, were her pride and comfort, and large was her dedication of self and talent to their services, was she reveled in the happy conviction that it was reciprocated entirely by the little beneficiaries. Dying she did not forget this gentle sponsorship, but left many messages of love and counsel for the member of her classes, all of which will be faithfully delivered in due season. One of the most beautiful traits in a character repleat with amiable elements was Miss McNary's intense love of home and all the sacred term stands for. It was a paramount passion with her, and the chiefest joy and comfort of that home, was herself and the unending and affectionate concern she manifested for those who shared the circle with her.
Those left to mourn the death of this gentle lovable woman, and who were first and dearest interest to her are her brothers, John H., and Charles N. McNary; her sisters, Mrs. H. T. Bruce, Mrs. W. T. Stolz and Miss Nina McNary; her grandfather, Charles Claggett, for the latter, of whom she often expressed in her last hours, a great love and veneration.
Funeral services will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock, at the First Baptist church, Rev. C. B. Bacon pastor, officiating, assisted by Rev. W. C. Kantner, D. D., pastor of the First Congregational chruch. The ministrations at the church wil be preceded by a service, for the family, at the home, corner of Commercial and North dytrryd, at 1:30 o'clock. In respect to the death of Miss McNary the public schools were dismissed at noon yesterday and the flags over the serveral buildings were floated at half-mast.
