DEATH CERTIFICATE:
OBITUARY:
DIED--At his residence in Salem, Oct. 1st, 1870, W. A. K. Mellen, U.S. Assistant Assessor of Internal Revenue. Funeral at 1 o'clock this afternoon from the Congregational Church. The pastors of various churches will confer a favor by making this announcement from their pulpits this morning. Death has again robbed all of a citizen we can ill spare, his friends of one long to be missed and mourned, and his family of a free and kind heart, that can never be forgotten.
Weekly Oregon Statesman 28 Sept. 1870 4:4

A LESSON - The sad and singular manner of the death of Mr. W. A. K. Mellen is one that conveys a warning and corrects a popular error regarding the treatment of the sick. It is a very common saying that if an invalid and especially a convalescent has a craving for any particular food it should be given him, for the desire is a prompting of nature for something which is needed. In this case the nurse had a quantity of candy which the sick man saw him him put away, and taking the opportunity when no one was present he managed to get out of bed and reach the candy. Eating the whole of it he went to bed and was speedily taken with the most alarming symptoms, which all the skill of his medical attendants could not relieve, and death ensued. Not the slightest blame could attach to any one, as the accident was evidently unavoidable as unforseen, but the lesson taught thereby may be of future benefit to others.

FUNERAL- The funeral of W. A. K. Mellen esq., which took place on Sunday, was quite an imposing procession. The Masons formed in order at their Lodge and marched to the residence and from thence with the bier to the Congregational Church. After the funeral sermons the hearse was followed by a long train of carriages and of citizens on foot besides the large line of Masons whose funeral ceremonies were observed at the grave.
