She married J. Monroe on 24 Oct 1867 at the home of Frederick Staiger, and Andrew Jackson Monroe names wife Sophia in his probate file.

OBITUARY: 
At the Salem hospital Wednesday evening, June 6, 1917, Mrs. Sophia Monroe, at the age of 75 years. Her death was the result of a serious operation about a week ago. She is survived by a brother, William Staiger, of Portland, and a sister, Mrs. A. J. Purvine, of this city. The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon from the First Congregational church and will be conducted by the Rev. James Elvin. Burial will be in the Odd Fellows' cemetery. The pall bearers will be C. S. Hamilton, R. J. Hendricks, John Bayne, Perry Raymond, G. C. Brown and D. J. Fry. The services will be at 2 o'clock. 
Mrs. Monroe was born June 29, 1842, in Pennsylvania, coming to Salem in 1866. While a young woman she became a member of the Aurora colony. For many years Mrs. Monore was a prominent worker with the First Congregational church, filling an active part in all church affairs. She was also a member of the committee whose work made possible the Salem Public Library.

Mrs. Sophia Monroe is Dead; Long Active for Welfare of Salem 
Mrs. Sophia Monroe, who has been a resident of Salem at 277 North Liberty street for forty years, died last night at 9:15 o’clock at the Salem hospital, following a serious operation of a week ago. She had been in poor health for some months. Mrs. Monroe was born June 29, 1842, in Missouri. She came to Salem in 1866. As a young woman, Mrs. Monroe was a member of the Aurora colony. She was the widow of Andrew J. Monroe, who died in Salem in 1876. 
Mrs. Monroe’s only surviving near relatives are a brother, William Staiger of Portland, and a sister, Mrs. A. J. Purvine, who makes her home with a daughter, Mrs. Eugene Prescott, on Mill street. Mr. Staiger formerly lived in Salem and has been here during his sister’s illness. 
Mrs. Monroe was well known and highly esteemed by all the older residents of Salem, and she was loved by a wide circle of intimate friends here and throughout the state. She was always ready to help any one in need, throughout her long and exemplary life. She was long prominent in the activities of Salem. She was among the first members of the library committee, whose work contributed to the beginnings of the present fine city library. She was during all the years of her residence here a faithful member of the First Congregational church, and that organization will be a beneficiary in her will. 
The body is at the establishment of Rigdon & Richardson, and funeral announcements will be made later.

MONROE FUNERAL AT CHURCH 
The funeral of the late Mrs. A. J. Monroe will be held from the First Congregational church, of which Rev. James Elvin is the pastor, this afternoon at 2 o’clock. Burial will be in Odd Fellows’ cemetery.
