OBITUARY:
The tolling of the Methodist bell on Sunday evening sent a feeling of sadness through the entire city, announcing as it did, the sad intelligence that Miss Althea Moores had passed away. Miss Moores was born in this city in November 1856, second daughter and the eldest of the twin daughters of the last John H. Moores, Esq. She was raised in his place and was a graduate of the Willamette University of class 1877.
From earliest young ladyhood she was identified with all that was musical or literary, and few entertainments or gatherings were regarded complete without her presence and assistance. No young ladies of the city were so intimately connected with socials as the twin sisters -- Misses Althea and Bertha Moores.
She was a consistent member of the Methodist church, and embodied all that was lovely and amiable in disposition, and her whole life was one typical of the better one beyond. That dreaded malady--consumption--removed her from a sphere that was opening with rare prospects of future happiness, and her widowed mother and immediate relatives are not the lease among those that deeply mourn. The last rites will take place on Wednesday. (from the Willamette Farmer in Moores’ scrapbook]

Miss Althea Moores, late of Salem, Oregon, was born Nov. 6th, 1856. She was a member of the infant class of Salem Methodist Sabbath school as soon she was able to take her place therein. She experienced religion while yet a little girl and was received in full connection at eleven years of age. She graduated in Willamette University in 1877 with honor. In February 1880 she began work as Preceptress in that institution. She was afterwards elected to the chair of Professor of Modern Languages, which place she filled with great acceptability until failing health compelled her to desist. He disease was consumption.
On April 29th, 1883 she was translated to the church triumphant. Her funeral was very largely attended, the audience completely filling the large auditorium of the church at Salem. The church was tastefully draped and trimmed. In the choir a chair was draped in mourning and left vacant. She had been a member for thirteen years and no one was more regular in attendance in the choir than she.
The University students attended in a body, rich floral offerings were laid by loving hands on her coffin. Prof. Van Scoy paid a touching tribute to her worth as a teacher and the love in which she was held by her students. Rev. F. P. Tower delivered an address of much beauty giving the outline of her life and an estimate of her character. Rev. John N. Denison, her pastor, preached the funeral sermon. (from Pacific Christian Advocate, May 17, 1883, Moores’ scrapbook)

The Polaris, Willamette University paper had several tributes and poetry in memory of Althea Moores. They also noted that Althea was engaged at the time of her death to Richmond Kelly of the class of ’78.
