Oregon Statesman, January 7, 1937, 5:2

Son of Isaac R. Moores and Ellen Lemon Moores, was born in Salem, Oregon, June 22, 1870, and died, January 6, 1937. His brothers who grew to manhood were Wylie, County Clerk and Ross, a printer. They all spent their lives in Salem. Carroll attended public school in Salem. For some years he followed the occupation of a carpenter and painter before his employment in March 1902 as janitor for the Supreme Court in the former State House. He continued in that capacity after the Supreme Court moved in 1914 to the present building, until 1936, when he gave up work on account of failing health.
Carroll Moores was dependable, methodical in habit, economical and saving. His closest friend was Harry "Buck" Hutton, of the Salem Fire Department and its Chief for 31 years. Carroll was a member of the Salem Elks Lodge, a Republican, and an ardent baseball fan. He never married. His father, [grandfather] Isaac R. Moores, a pioneer of 1852, was a member of the Oregon Constitutional Convention of 1857, a lumberman and railroad promoter associated with the Oregon-California Railroad and the Ben Holladay group displaced in 1876 by Henry Villard. Like many others he was unsuccessful in his railroad activities.
There is no doubt that Carroll Moores wanted the finest and most appropriate memorial his money could buy as a gift to the people of Salem. This is evidenced by his Will, which entrusted the final choice to others rather than risk his own humble judgment in the selection of an enduring monument to the early pioneers of Oregon. Arthur S. Benson, in program printed for the unveiling of the Pioneer Memorial statue.
