DEATH CERTIFICATE:
OBITUARY:
COMMITTED SUICIDE. Ed Morgan Ends His Career With Morphine. Several Days of Drinking Made Him Despondent And Tired of Living. Edward Morgan, a single man 25 years old, committed suicide in this city last night by taking morphine. The fatal dose is supposed to have been taken about 6 o’clock. The fact was not discovered till after 8 o’clock, and the poison had done its work too well to yield to medicine. Death resulted about 12:45 this morning. Ed Morgan and his younger brother Frank came to town yesterday afternoon from their home in Polk county about eight miles from this city and four miles from Independence. Ed. Had been drinking hard for several days and was scarcely in his right mind. While in town he took a drink of beer with his brother and remarked that it would be his last drink. He also told his brother that he would not return home with him yesterday and that if he (Ed) did not reach home by today noon that they might then come after him. He gave many other intimations of a purpose to die. The younger brother went home and reported the gloomy talk of Ed to their mother. She at once became alarmed and Frank hurried back to town with her. Going to the Sargeant lodging house on Court street, where Frank knew Ed had obtained a room, they discovered the older brother unconscious. Dr. Byrd was summoned at once. He found a morphine bottle in the room from which about forty grains had been taken. The stomach of the patient was exhausted and strychnia and atrophia administered and everything possible done to restore the dying man. Dr. Mott was also called to render what service he could. But all efforts were unavailing and the poisoned man died. The father and sister, whom Frank had gone for on discovering Ed’s condition, arrived an hour or so before the death. Mr. and Mrs. J. G. Morgan, parents of deceased, formerly lived in East Salem. The dead man spent most of his life here. For eight years he worked in the Salem Iron works. But he was prone to drink and intoxicants wrecked him. Lately he has been working on the Hayden hop ranch near Eola. Before Morgan died it was discovered that he had not taken all the morphine missing from the bottle. Much of it had been spilled on the floor. It is not known where he obtained the poison. He had only 76 cents when he left home. Daily Oregon Statesman 28 September 1893 4:2
