NOTES:
IOOF - James Murphy, age 40; 1880 Census - there is a Jas. Murphy, age 30, a laborer enumerated in the household of L. Pettyjohn ANOTHER CRANK. Last Wednesday afternoon while Messrs. F. J. Babcock and A. M. Clough were placing the lid on James Murphy's coffin, which was at that time in the Thompson house, a portly built stranger with a long ministerial beard rushed in holding a long book in his left hand, and exclaiming, "Give attention, gentlemen. This book is the Bible, and I believe its mandates are correct. I have a special mission to perform and I came from Seattle to perform that mission. This man must receive a Christian bruial." He then turned to the corpse, which was again uncovered, and said, "Dead man, in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I command thee to arise." He fastened his eyes on the corpse for a few moments, during which time the crowd that had gathered by this time expected at any instant to see it commence kicking. But the dead man failed to kick, and the disappointed stranger, having ascertained that the deceased meant business, took "French leave," without leaving his future address, and has not since been heard from. He is evidently a crank from Crankville. Weekly Oregon Statesman 10 Jul 1885 6:1
