KILLED BENEATH A TREE.
Accidental Death of Frank Nelson of This City in the Wilds of the North Santiam.
Funeral Thursday.
News was received at Salem Tuesday evening of the accidental death, in the Gold Creek mining district near Gates, in this county on Monday afternoon of Frank E. Nelson, a young man of this city. Details of the accident were not obtainable last night, but it is learned that the young man was killed by a falling tree. Nelson was in the employ of the Investors' Mining & Milling Company, of this city. Nelson was 23 years of age and unmarried. He was the son of Richard Nelson, of this city, and formerly worked in the Livesley hop yard, near this city. P. A Wilkins, of Gates, and two companions reached Salem with the remains at 1 o'clock this afternoon. The body was taken to the undertaking parlors of A. M. Clough, on State street, where it was prepared for burial, the relatives of the deceased having requested that an inquest be not held, for the reason that the death was, to all appearances, the result of an unfortunate accident.
Funeral services will be conducted at the Clough undertaking parlors at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, and burial will take place in Rural cemetery.
The men, who accompanied the remains to Salem, report that the death of the young man was the result of an accident. With some fellow workmen, Nelson was engaged in felling trees about 5 o'clock Monday afternoon, when one of the falling trees swerved from its natural course, and striking the unfortunate man, pinned him to the ground. The diameter of the tree was about two feet and its entire weight fell on Nelson's neck and shoulders, breaking his neck, and badly crushing his chest. Death followed almost instantaneously, the man's companions being unable to give him any aid.
The scene of the accident was in the wilds of the forest on the Little North Fork of the Santiam, about 15 miles from Gates. Twelve workmen carried the remains out over a rude trail for a distance of 10 miles, where a conveyance was waiting, and the body was brought to Salem.
