OBITUARY:
At the house of T. Scott, on Court street, Sunday, June 27, l886, James Patterson, aged about 45 years. Patterson was at one time a clerk at the Capital Lumbering mills, but has been at Walla Walla for some time. He died without the ministering hands of near and dear ones, and his body was loaded into a hack and taken to Undertaker Babcock’s, when it was encased in a coffin, and from there it was buried yesterday afternoon. As the hack passed along the streets with the body lying in the bottom, with only a sheet to cover it from view, yet which could not entirely cover up the shape and form of the body, these lines arose vividly to the writer’s mind: "Rattle his bones, over the stones; He’s only a pauper whom no body owns." Oregon Statesman 29 Jun l886 3:3
