DEATH CLAIMS MONUMENT FIRM FOUNDER
James C. Jones, 83, founder of the Capital Monument Works at 2210 S. Commercial St., died Saturday at the Salem hospital he entered about two weeks ago. The business, the only one of its kind here since its 1914 founding, has during the past eight years been operated by Jones’ sons, Daryl F. and Donald L. Jones.
During that time, Jones’ health kept him out of active operations. He was born May 22, 1873 in Richmond, Va., and first moved to Raymond, Calif. In 1910 he went into the monument business in Portland, two years later at Forest Grove, and two years later at Salem.
Jones was a member of Lodge AF & AM, The Elks, the Odd Fellows, the Woodmen of the World, the Eagles and the Chamber of Commerce --all in Salem. Besides his two sons, he leaves the widow, the former Pearl C. Parkhill of Duluth, Minn., another son James Courtney Jones, Salem, a sister, Mrs. Hattie Warner, Atlanta, Ga. Arrangements are in charge of the Clough-Barrick funeral home.
