OBITUARY:
Mrs. Mary Payton Dies.
Well Known in Oregon.
Mrs. Mary Payton, long a resident of Oregon and widow of the late Dr. Daniel Payton, died yesterday at the home of Mrs. Jennie Woolery, 344 South Twenty-fifth street. Mrs. Payton was appointed by the governor of Oregon in 1893 to represent Oregon at the World's Columbian exposition in Chicago, and was prominent in large social activities of early Oregon. The old Payton home was at one time on North Commercial street and was the scene of much of the social life of Salem and the state with Dr. and Mrs. Payton as hosts.
However, earlier in life Mrs. Payton was Mrs. Hoyt and it was as Mrs. Hoyt that she presided as a hostess at the world's fair. Mrs. Payton was 81 years old at the time of her death. For many years she has been active in St. Paul's Episcopal church. She is survived by a step-daughter, Mrs. Anna H. Maxwell, who arrived yesterday afternoon from Portland. The body is at the Terwilliger home, and funeral announcements will be made later.
