A PIONEER PASSES AWAY
Lewis Pettyjohn, The Well-Known Rancher Dies at His Home in this City Lewis Pettyjohn, a well known farmer and Oregon pioneer, died at the family home, No. 424 Cottage street, Salem, Oregon, Tuesday, October 9, 1900, at 5 p.m.
Lewis Pettyjohn was aged 79 years, 10 months and 18 days. Deceased was a pioneer of 1847, and was widely known throughout Oregon. He was a native of Tennessee, and early removed to Missouri. There, on March 21, 1844 he was married to Sarah A. Rains, the wife who survives now after over a half century of the journey through life.
In 1847 the family came to Oregon by ox team, settling south of Salem on a donation land claim, where they lived until a year ago, when they moved to Salem on account of Mr. Pettyjohn's failing health. Eight children were born to the family, five of whom survive.
The funeral was held at 2:30 p.m. today, from the First Christian church. Rev. P. O. Powell, M. A. pastor of the church conducted funeral. Interment will be had in Rural cemetery.
Lewis Pettyjohn will be remembered as a kindhearted and hospitable man, a pioneer of the old style, whose greatest failing if he had any was a generosity toward the whole human family that knew no bounds. He kept open house to the passerby and stranger, on the old ranch south of the city. His orchard and his table were free to all visitors and in his way Lewis Pettyjohn reigned in his castle with the liberality of a king. The poor had no better friend. To the extent of his means he dealt out with a lavish hand and died poor. Such men are rare in these days and deceased will be remembered by hundreds of hearts and made glad. He seemed to rejoice in the enjoyment of others, and to live solely to make this world merrier and happier. He made no professions of a religious life but if all his kindness of heart and good will to man counts for him in the final reckoning, the roster will show few better men or more congenial spirits were ever created than Uncle Lewis Pettyjohn.
