OBITUARY: 
JAY S. PHILLIPS' DEAD
Former Member of the Fire Department Passes at Home Here. 
Jay S. Phillips, a long time Salem resident died at the home of his brother, W. H. Phillips, 294 S. Cottage street, yesterday morning at 7:15 o'clock, following a two years illness. He was 53 years old and unmarried. Mr. Phillips was born in Idaho, in the vicinity of the Snake river when his parents were crossing the plains from Illinois to Oregon. The family settled here in the fall of 1862 and Mr. Phillips has lived here ever since babyhood. He was an exempt fireman in this city. 
On account of illness he has not been active for some time, but he has only been confined for the past two weeks. He has made his home for many years with his brother, W. H. Phillips. He was a member of the A. O. U. W. lodge. The funeral will be held today at 2 o'clock from the chapel of Webb & Clough. Rev. H. E. Marshall will officiate and burial will be in Odd Fellows' cemetery.
