BIOGRAPHICAL:
James Plant acted as the sexton for Salem Pioneer Cemetery from about 1909 until his death in 1944.

OSBH DC (Marion County 1944) #656 - James Plant, male, widowed (Mary Ann Plant), occupation farmer and cemetery sexton, b. 16 Jul 1864 in Ontario, Canada, d. 23 Jul 1944 in Salem, Oregon (1548 Saginaw St.) at the age of 80 y's 7 d's, name of father not given, maiden name of mother Mary Simmonds, interment 31 Jul, undertaker Barrick, informant Mrs. R. E. Clark of Salem.

OBITUARY: 

JAMES PLANT DIES SUNDAY
James Plant, for more than 56 years a resident of Salem and for 35 years of that time sexton at the IOOF cemetery here, died Sunday at his home on Saginaw street after a short illness. 
In Guelph, Ontario, Canada, where he was born July 16, 1864, he married Mary Ann Woodhouse. With her he almost immediately set out for Salem, where they made their home together to the time of her death in August 1941. Until he took the position as sexton, Plant farmed on Howell Prarie. He was a member of the Odd Fellows. 
Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. R. E. Clark; and son Calfin [sic - Calvin] Plant and a granddaughter, Mildred Clark, all of Salem. Funeral arrangements had not been complete this morning. They will be announced from Clough Barrick company.

PLANT -- James Plant at his residence, 1548 Saginaw street, July 23. Survived by a daughter, Mrs. R. E. Clark, a son, Calvin Plant, and a granddaughter. Mildred Clark, all of Salem. Services will be held from the Clough-Barrick company chapel, Rev. Dudley Strain officiating. Interment in the IOOF cemetery.
