OBITUARY:
MRS JORDAN DEAD
The Sad Ending Came Yesterday Afternoon
She Was a Sister of Frederick Schwatka, the Arctic Explorer, Now Deceased.
At 3 o'clock yesterday afternoon at the family home, corner of Marion and Liberty streets, Mrs. Helen Schwatka Jordan passed away after an illness of several months with Bright's disease. Last fall her health failed and she with her husband, J. D. Jordan, went to San Francisco where they spent the winter with her brother, A. C. Schwatka, who is a printer. As Mrs. Jordan's condition became steadily worse the couple returned to Oregon, reaching this city last Thursday and she declined rapidly, breathing her last at the hour heretofore mentioned.
Mrs. Jordan was the daughter of a pioneer of Oregon, F. G. Schwatka. She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, fifty-eight years ago, and with her parents came overland to Oregon in 1853. She was married to J. D. Jordan in Albany in 1856 and they came to reside in Salem in 1861, locating on the lot which they have occupied continuously since that time--on the corner of Marion and Liberty streets. The union of Mr. and Mrs. Jordan was blessed with three children--two daughters, Clara and Katie, who died in infancy, and the son, Harvey S. Jordan, now grown to manhood, who is one of the most highly respected young gentlemen of this city.
The son and husband are left to mourn the death of the mother and wife respectively. Mrs. Jordan has a sister, Mrs. Thos. H. Reynolds, of Portland. Lieutenant Fred Schwatka, the Arctic explorer and renowned traveler who was buried in Rural cemetery near this city a few years ago, was her brother.
Mrs. Jordan was an honored member of Salem Rebekah Lodge No. 1 I.O.O.F., in which organization she took more than a passing interest, and in the ranks of which order she will be sadly missed. The funeral will take place on Wednesday, due announcement of which will be made in the Statesman tomorrow.

Copeland. The casket will not be opened at the church and all friends desiring to view the remains can do so by calling at the residence before 1 o'clock.
