GRAVEMARKERS BEARING STONECUTTER’S IDENTIFICATION
Marble tablet gravemarker of Adolphus J. Riely (1835-1868), Salem printer who purchased Plot 024 in 1858 and was first husband of Sarah Strang Riely Small. This marker, on Lot 1NW, is notable for its carved occupational icon, a hand type-setter’s composing tray. Inscription at lower right corner of epitaph (west) face of die: “J.A. McDonald/Salem.” On the headstones of Kitterman and Chitwood in Plot 194 and Armbruster, Plot 692, the stone cutter used the surname style “MacDonald.” The stone cutter employed Eastlake-style gouge work as a decorative frame for A.J. Riely’s epitaph, and carved a sprig of foliate gouge work beneath the epitaphs on the headstones in Plot 194. Photos, May 27, 2012.
