1880 OR CENSUS - John A. Smith, age 73, b. Bevaria [sic], occupation carpet weaver, is enumerated with wife, Mary, age 63, b. Ohio.
Marion Co. PROBATE file indicates that John A. Smith died March 21, 1890 and left a Testate will dated March 18, 1890. J. W. Crawford was appointed Adm. on April 10, 1890. Heirs were his "present wife" Meriba/Merab Smith, age 73; Children (6): John V. Smith, age 45 of near Silverton; Peter Smith, age 42 of Silverton; Martin E. or G. Smith, age 40 of Salem; William C. Smith, age 36 of Alston, New Brunswick; Christian Smith, age 38 of Spearfish, ND; and Susie Burkholder, age 34 of Salem. To Zion Evangelical Church of Salem (of the Conference Ev. Assoc.) for the securing a bell for church. N. Bier and E. S. Bellinger, pastors of the church were named as executors of will but declined to serve..

OBITUARY: 

SMITH -- At his home on Water street, Salem, on the morning of Friday, March 21, 1890, of consumption, John A. Smith, aged 73 years. The deceased came to Oregon from Iowa fifteen years ago, since which time he has made his home in this city. The hour of death is not known. At three o'clock in the morning Mrs. Smith was at his bedside, and when next she went to him at five o'clock he was dead. The funeral will be conducted this afternoon at 2:30 o'clock from the Evangelical church, the remains being interred in the I.O.O.F. cemetery.
