OBITUARY:
JOHN H. SCOTT, FORMER COUNTY JUDGE, SUMMONED.
John H. Scott, who at the turn of the century served as county judge for Marion county and gave the county its first good roads, died at his home at 1189 Court street Friday morning following an illness of a number of years.
A native of Marion county, Scott was born near Mt. Angel September, 10, 1865, the son of Alexander D. Scott, a native of Canadaigua, N. Y., who came to the Pacific coast in 1852, and Ellen Morris Miller Scott who came to Oregon from Missouri in 1853.
Scott was educated in the district schools and Silverton high school and then entered Willamette university. After his first year at the university he taught school for a year and then returned to the university for another year. This was followed by two years of teaching after which he moved to Portland in 1892.
In Portland he engaged in the real estate business and entered the Portland Law school. He attended that school for a year and then was called to Salem because of his mother’s death. He continued his law studied in Salem and was admitted to the bar in 1895.
Scott enrolled as a senior in the law department at the University of Michigan in the fall of 1895 and received his Bachelor of Law from that school in 1896. On the return trip to Oregon Scott bicycled through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming, traveling the distance in four months and covering 5,000 miles.
On returning to Salem, Scott began the practice of law and in June, 1900, was nominated for the position of county judge on the Republican ticket. He began the duties of that office in July, 1900.
Surviving Scott are his wife of Salem; a sister, Miss Clara Scott of Gates, Oregon; and two brothers, Alexander Scott of Gates and Elmer Scott in eastern Oregon.
Services will be held at the Clough-Barrick chapel Monday, December 15, at 10:30 a.m. with Dr. Paul N. Poling and Rev. B. J. Holland officiating. Interment will be in the IOOF cemetery.
