1870 OR CENSUS - L. S. Scott, age 39 b. Conn. and a grocer with is wife, C. J. age 30, b. Ohio and children: W. age 8, Grant age 6, and Pearl age 3 --all b. in Oregon, J. Pettibone, age 16, b. Missouri, is enumerated as the housekeeper. 
1880 OR CENSUS - L. S. Scott, age 49, postmaster, b. Conn., is enumerated with Eliza, age 40, b. Ohio, and children Grant, age 15, postal clerk, Pearl age 13, - Percy , age 9 , Lloyd age 4, and Hubert age 1, all born in Oregon.

OBITUARY: 
CAPTAIN SCOTT NO MORE. 
A Pioneer Politician, Legislator and Ex-Postmaster Dead. Died, at the family home at 390 Center street in Salem, Monday morning, at 4 a.m.
LYMAN SAMUEL SCOTT, aged 62 on October 1st. Deceased came to Oregon in 1861 as captain of Co. D. Fourth California Infantry vols., stationed at Fort Yamhill. He was at different times commander at that post, Fort Hoskins, Siletz Block House, and in 1865 was ordered with his company to establish a post in the Harney Lake country. 
After being mustered out at San Francisco in 1865 he returned to Oregon and went into merchandising at Portland, coming to Salem in 1866. Here by his social qualities he rose rapidly in private esteem and no man soon had more warm friends than he. 
L. S. Scott was Mayor of Salem in 1868-69, sheriff of Marion county in 1872, member of the legislature and city council. He was in his prime a political leader and always an enthusiastic Republican, being state chairman in 1878. Succeeding H. M. Thatcher, Mr. Scott was postmaster at Salem from 1879 to 1883, under President Hayes and filling the office acceptably to the government and the people. He was succeeded by A. B. Crossman. Under the present administration he was employed in the service until rendered unfit by disease. 
Mr. Scott leaves a wife and five children, two sons and a daughter at Salem and two sons at Portland in business. The funeral will be from the Episcopal church Tuesday at 2 p.m. The Masonic order will attend the grave. Mr. Scott was also a member of the G. A. R. and A. O. U. W.

SCOTT--At 4 a.m., Monday, November 21, 1892, after a protracted illness, Captain Lyman S. Scott, aged 62 years. Captain Scott was born in Litchfield, Conn., October 1, 1832. In 1848 he drove a team to Santa Fe, New Mexico, and returning to his home in Illinois two years later took the gold fever and started with an ox team for California, where, in the vicinity of Volcano, Amador county, he spent eleven years in the placer mines. In 1861, on the breaking out of the Civil War he raised Company D. Fourth California infantry volunteers, and was appointed captain of the organization. The company was detailed for service in Oregon, being stationed at Fort Yamhill, in July, 1865, the company was ordered to Eastern Oregon and established Camp Curry in Harney Lake valley. In December of the same year the company was ordered to San Francisco, when it was mustered out of service, Captain Scott returned immediately to Oregon, engaging in the mercantile business at Portland, where he remained but a short time. 
He came to Salem in 1866, where he has made his home ever since. In 1868 he was elected mayor of this city and in 1869 was re-elected. In 1872 he was elected sheriff of Marion county and two years later became chairman of the state republican central committee, which position he held until 1878, when he was elected a member of the House of Representatives. 
In 1879 he was appointed postmaster of Salem. Captain Scott was a member of the A.O.U.W. and also of the Masonic order. He was married in Volcano, Cal., on October 13, 1858 to Eliza J. Erwin who, with four sons and a daughter, survives him.
