OBITUARY: 
Henry W. Meyers Called at Age 69; 
Formerly Merchant Here, More Recently Head of State Prison. 
Henry W. Meyers, former superintendent of the Oregon state penitentiary and a retired Salem merchant, died at the age of 69 years yesterday afternoon at the family residence, 430 North Summer street. He had been ill for a long period. Funderal services were set by the Clough-Barrick company, in charge, for 1:30 p.m. Monday. They will be held from St. Paul’s Episcopal church with Rev. George H. Swift officiating. Interment will be at Mt. Crest Abbey. Henry W. Meyers was born June 2, 1869, in Glennville, Kern county, Calif., the son of Joseph and Ellen Harvey Meyers. His father was a native of Germany coming to California in the early ‘50’s His mother, a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, sailed for California around Cape Horn in the early ‘80’s. The family came to Oregon and settled in Salem January 20, 1880, the father buying the old White Corner general store, which he operated for a few years in partnership with Jacob Rosenberg. Henry W. Meyers attended early school in California and later attended Bishop academy and Willamette university in Oregon. He and his brother, Milton L. Meyers, in 1906 purchased their father’s business and operated the store for 14 years under the name of H. W. and M. L. Meyers. The Miller Mercantile company became owners of the store in April, 1920. In 1896 Mr. Meyers married Miss Ellen Edes, the daughter of George A. and Rhoda Chapman Edes. Mr. Edes was formerly sheriff and a county clerk of Marion county. March 12, 1927, Mr. Meyers was appointed superintendent of the state prison by the state board of control during the Patterson administration. He served in that position until the beginning of the Meier administration. During the world was he was active in the advancement of Red Cross work. He was a life member of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks. Mr. Meyer was one of those instrumental in the promotion and building of the Salem General hospital. Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Ellen Edes Meyers; brothers, Milton L. Meyers of Salem, Donald Meyers of LaGrande and Charles E. Meyers of Pittsburgh, Pa.

Meyers of Salem, Donald Meyers of LaGrande and Charles E. Meyers of Pittsburgh, Pa. Services will be held from St. Paul’s Episcopal church Monday, March 27 at 1:30 p.m. with Rev. George H. Swift officiating. Concluding services at Mt. Crest abbey under the direction of the Clough-Barrick company. Oregon Statesman 25 March 1939 5:1 Henry W. Meyers’ Funeral Monday Funeral services for Henry W. Meyers, 69, superintendent of the state prison here during the Patterson administration, will be held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o’clock from St. Paul’s Episcopal church. Rev. George H. Swift officiating. Interment will be in Mt. Crest abbey. Mr. Meyers died Friday and leaves the widow, Mrs. Ellen Edes Meyers; brothers, Milton L. Meyers of Salem, Donald Meyers of LaGrande, and charles E. Meyers of Pittsburgh, Pa.
