OBITUARY:
BROWN -- At her home on North [Cottage] street, north of Union, on Sunday evening, September 30, 1906, Mary J. Brown, aged 71 years, 9 months, and 18 days. Mrs. Brown was born in Belfast, Ireland, January 12, 1835, and came to America with her parents when a little child. The family lived in Pennsylvania for a few years, and then settled at Des Moines, Iowa. She was married in that city and her husband died there nearly 20 years ago. She came to Oregon in 1891, and resided in Salem ever since. She was a woman of culture and of high character, kind and helpful to all with whom she came in contact. She was much beloved and respected by all who knew her and the members of her family in this community have widespread sympathy in their grief. She was a deeply Christian woman and an earnest member of the Presbyterian church. Mrs. Brown had been suffering during the past six months or more with dropsy, which affected her heart and during that time her physicians and her family have known that her tenure of life was uncertain, yet her death came suddenly and unexpectedly. Her son Albert L. Brown, chief engineer of the water works, with his wife, was visiting her on Sunday afternoon and evening according to custom, and she had been sitting in her rocking chair taking part in the conversation. About 6 o'clock in the evening she went into a room by herself and a few moments later her daughter-in-law went to bid her goodby before starting home, when they were horrified to find the old lady sitting there dead, her head leaning against the wall. No sign of a struggle or pain marked her passage to eternity. Death had evidently come to her as a peaceful sleep and she had answered the summons without murmuring or resistance. Mrs. Brown is survived by six children, Albert L. Brown, Miss Belle Brown, Mrs. D. C. Minto, of this city and David B. Brown, Wallace Brown and Mrs. O. W. Moon of Des Moines, Iowa. Mr. Thomas King of this city is her brother. The funeral will be held from the residence this afternoon at 2:30 and interment will be had at the Odd Fellow's cemetery. The services will be conducted by Rev. H. T. Babcock of the Presbyterian church. Chapman, pg. 117 Oregon Statesman 2 October 1906 8:4 AN ESTIMABLE WOMAN DEAD; MRS. Babcoci, of the Presbyterian church, of which Mrs. Brown had long been a consistent member.
