OBITUARY:
2 Men Drown in Willamette; Fred Cogswell of Liberty, Claude Heisler, jr., Youthful Victims.
With the drownings of two young men Sunday, the Willamette river claimed three lives here over the weekend.
Victims were:
Fred Cogswell, 18, of Liberty, who drowned Sunday afternoon while diving from a canoe opposite West Salem.
Claude Newton Heisler, jr., 17 of Gervais, who drowned Sunday afternoon in an attempt to swim a return crossing of the river near Wheatland ferry.
Moss S. Wallace, 63 West Salem, who succumbed from a heart attack while fishing with his family from a boat in the river Saturday night.
EMERGENCY CAR ANSWERS.
Cogswell’s body was recovered in less than an hour after he dived into shallow water from a canoe in which also was Francis Rothweiler, 862 North 16th street. Artificial respiration and application of the city first aid car’s resuscitator failed to revive him. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Cogswell, who at the time of the mishap were in Newport.
The body of Heisler, who apparently became exhausted and sank as he attempted a return swim of the breadth of the river after accomplishing a one-way crossing, was recovered two hours later, some 50 yards below the ferry. The call for Salem'’ first aid car came at the time it was on the Cogswell case, and although it answered the Heisler call, efforts at resuscitation were useless because of the long submersion.
Heisler was born in Portland, December 1, 1921. He lived at Eldridge for the past 11 years, graduating from grade school this year.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Newton Heisler; sister, Violet; brothers, Vincent and Robert; a half brother, Leonard Heisler; and a half sister, Marguerite Heisler.
