OBITUARY: UNIDENTIFIED MAN COMMITS SUICIDE
Single Bullet in the Heart Causes Death
Found by Boys Fishing.
The body of an unknown, later identified as that of Christ Bethleffen, was found yesterday afteroon on the bank of the river near the gas house. The discovery was made by two boys, Rennie Bennet and Vercle Louden.
Yesterday morning as the two lads, who reside on Front street not far from the scene of the tragedy were fishing along the river bank, they noticed the man, apparently asleep, and concluded that he was sleeping off a debauch. While prowling around the same place in the afternoon they noticed that he had not moved, and began to throw pebbles at him. Then they saw a revolver lying on the ground, and becoming fearful that if the man awoke he might take a shot at them, the boys desisted and notified the sheriff. The coroner was called and took charge of the body.
Later developments brought out the fact that Bethleffen purchased the revolver with which he took his life from the store of Watt Shipp for $6, giving the name recorded above. Examination of the weapon proved that two chambers had been fired. In killing himself the young man had opened his shirt front and placed the revolver squarely over his heart. One bullet did the work. The dead man is apparently about 24 years of age and of light complexion.
No papers were found on his person that would throw any light on the question as to why he should want to take his life and up to this morning no one had positively identified him.
