NOTE Ellen and William J. Jarvis were divorced in Marion co in 1915 [Marion Co divorce case 12894, Oregon State Archives]. Ellen later remarried to George Butler. She died 13 Oct 1961 at Scappoose, Columbia Co, Oregon and was buried in Columbia Memorial Gardens [OSBH DC 1961 Columbia Co #15275]

1920 OR CENSUS - John W., Kessel, age 38, b. Missouri, is enumerated with wife Ellen Kessel, age 37, b. Wisconsin, and Frank Jarvis, age 16, identified as grandson [in the household], b. N. Dakota. They are enumerated in the home of Joseph Fennell, age 79, b. Ireland, and wife Lovina, age 79, b. Canada.  Ellen Kessel is identifed as the adopted daughter of Joseph Fennell.

OSBH DC (Marion 1924) #801 - John Wesley Kessel resided at 550 Water St., Salem died on Nov. 26, 1924, at the age of 44 years, 8 months and 22 days. He was a bridge tender, and the son of Ambrose Kessel, born in Virginia, and Matilda Rayner, born in Kansas. Informant was his wife Ellen Kessel, Salem, Oregon.

OBITUARY: 

John Wesley Kessel died at his residence, 550 Water street, Nov. 26, at the age of 44 years. He is survived by his widow, Ellen, his mother, Mrs. Matilda Kessel; a brother, Guy of Missouri, and three sisters, Mrs. C. N. Hathaway and Mrs. Charlie Phillips, both of Salem, and Mrs. S. B. Wicker of Westfield, Indiana. Mr. Kessel was a member of IOOF. Arrangements in charge of Webb's Funeral parlors. Oregon Statesman 27 November 1924 3:3 The funeral of John Wesley Kessel who died Nov. 26, will be held at the Webb Funeral parlors Saturday at 2 o'clock. The IOOF lodge will have charge of services. Interment will be in the IOOF cemetery.
