1850 IN CENSUS - Nathaniel McCartney, age 32, occupation farmer, b. Ohio, is enumerated with Abigail, age 31, b. New Jersey, along with William H., age 8, b. Indiana, Mary L., age 7, b. Indiana, Benjamin F., age 4, b. Indiana, and Albert, age 2, b. Indiana. 
DIED of Consumption/TB. After his death his widow, Abigail, and children William, Mary Louisa, Benjamin, Albert, John and Thomas moved to the Chico, California area.

OBITUARY: 
Died--On Saturday morning, Jan [Jun] 7, 1856, at his residence in the Forks on Santiam, Linn Co., Nathaniel McCartney, aged 36 years. 
His remains will be deposited by the Odd Fellows, of which Fraternity he was a member, in their Rural Cemetery near Salem, on Monday evening, at 2 o'clock. 
Oregon Statesman, June 10, 1856 3:1. 

I. O. O. F. -- Whereas, It has pleased Almighty God, in his mysterious providence, to remove from our midst our much esteemed brother, Nathaniel McCartney, who died after a long illness, at his residence in Linn county, on the 7th of June, 1856, in the 37th year of his age, therefore RESOLVED, That in the death of brother McCartney, our order has lost a truly useful and valuable member, the community a good citizen and his family, an affectionate husband and kind and indulgent father. RESOLVED, That to his bereaved family, we tender our most sincere condolence, hoping that we may all meet in the Lodge Celestial, where the orphans' cry, and widows' wail will be heard no more. RESOLVED, That in token of our regard for our depated brother, we will wear the usual badge of mourning for thirty days. RESOLVED, That the Secretary be requested to furnish each of the Salem papers with a copy of these resolutions. JONATHAN O'DONALD, N. G. G. H. Jones, Sec'y.
