JOHN BRANNON OF WEST SALEM KILLED WHEN BRAKE STAFF GIVES WAY - LEAVES BIG FAMILY
Jno. W. Brannon, a farmer, while [sic] lives three miles west of Salem while driving down a hill with a load of wood at 4 o'clock yesterday afternoon, was thrown from the wagon and instantly killed.
Brannon was sitting on the front of a load holding the brake staff. Before the foot of the hill was reached the staff broke throwing him forward to the ground, the wheels of the heavy vehicle passing over his head, terribly mutilating him.
Brannon leaves a father, mother, wife and five children in West Salem.
He was buried at 3 o'clock this afternoon from the undertaking parlors of Coroner Clough. Rev. Babcock officiating. Interment was made in City View [sic - Rural] cemetery.

CITIZENS SHOULD HELP
There is an opportunity for everyone in our fair city to do a kind and noble act.
You all no doubt have read of the terrible accident which happened to Mr. John Brannon - his head was crushed by the wheels of a heavy wood wagon. Mr. Brannon was killed instantly, hence he suffered no pain; but think of the poor widow and five fatherless children being left homeless and penniless, alone in a little cabin on a wood ranch, where they have been living while the husband was working hard to support his wife and little children. The oldest child is a girl 13 years of age; the other four are quite small, they are strangers, but not left in a strange land but in a loyal Christian land.
Fathers, they need money; mothers, little girls and boys need clothes, have you got something you would like to give them? If so leave them at the home of Mrs. M. P. Dennis, 1790 State street.
