OBITUARY: At the poor house, near Salem, Wednesday, May 30, 1888, Wm. Alexander Beatty, aged 77 years, 1 month, and 17 days. "Grandpa Beatty," as he was familiarly known about Salem, was born at Clarksburg, Virginia, April 13, 1811. He came to Marion county, Oregon, eleven years ago, and resided at Brooks until two years ago. The infirmities of old age made him a county charge several months since, and for the past six weeks he has lain helpless in the poor home. He was the father of Mrs. Goodrich, John F. Beatty, and James Beatty, near Chemawa. Mr. and Mrs. Illidge, in charge at the poor house, were kind an attentive to the old man during his illness.
