OBITUARY:
DEATH MOURNED.
Mrs. D. W. Craig Passes at Son's Home. Prominent Woman of Early Days is Dead -
State and City Has Felt Influence of Her Life in This Section.
Mrs. D. W. Craig of this city died yesterday morning at the home of her son, F. S. Craig, at 585 South Commercial street, and in her passing away Oregon and Salem suffer the keenly felt loss of one of its most prominent pioneers. Mrs. Craig was the wife of D. W. Craig, the well known pioneer newspaper man and one of Oregon's best known writers. She was 78 years, 11 months and 2 days old at the time of her death. Thoughout her last illness of three weeks letters of sympathy and flowers have been received from all parts of the state. Long Time Resident. Mrs. Craig, whose maiden name was Wealthy Little Waterous, was born in Genessee county, Michigan, November 9, 1834. She came to Oregon in June, 1860, and located near Oregon City with her brother-in-law, E. D. Kelly. At that place, in September 1861, she was united in marriage to D. W. Craig, and in 1863 moved to Salem, where the family has lived ever since. Known Throughout State. Mrs. Craig was a devout Christian, an active church worker and was prominently associated with the First Congregational church, particularly during the pastorages of the Rev. O. Dickenson and the Rev. P. S. Knight. She was prominent in the social life of Salem and Oregon City during the early days and was known throughout the state as a hospitable and generous hostess. About her centered much of the social life of the executive set and often at her home distinguished visitors from neighboring states found entertainment.
A Fine Type.
With the passing of Mrs. Craig, this section loses one of its grand women; women the state depended upon to build the foundation for its growth and prosperity. Among the best of mothers she has gone to her last resting place and leaves behind her an empty place in the hearts of hosts of friends who had grown to love and respect her. The husband and son, F. S. Craig, survive her. Funeral Today. The funeral will be held from the residence on South Commercial street at 3 p. m. today. Rev. P. S. Knight, an old friend of the family, will officiate. The remains will be removed to Portland Monday to the Portland Crematorium for final disposition.
